The loading indicator
While Smart Matrix is loading - row segments arriving, a layer being opened, the preload running - a spinning wheel with a cancel cross appears in the floating strip at the top right of the visual.

What you see
| State | Look | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Loading | Yellow wheel with a cancel cross | The visual is loading rows. |
| Opening a row | Orange wheel | A row you opened is waiting for its children (a row in a layer that is not loaded yet). |
| Paused | Yellow, a pause sign, and a Continue button | You cancelled and something is still missing. |
| Done | Check mark for a few seconds | A long load is over. The bubble says what it did, for example "Loaded 120,000 rows". |
The indicator only appears after about half a second of work, so a quick fetch never flashes it. It stays a moment once it is there, so it does not flicker between two waves of loading. There are no time estimates.
The bubble
Rest the mouse on the indicator to read what it is doing, for example "Opening layer 3 - 118 of about 240 groups", what else is going on, and what the cross does. The bubble keeps up with the indicator while you hover.
Cancel and Continue
- The cross (Cancel) stops loading what has not arrived yet. What is already there stays.
- After a cancel with something still missing, the indicator turns paused and shows Continue. It stays until you press Continue or what was missing has arrived some other way (for example because you opened a row).
- Continue takes up what the cancel dropped: the remaining rows, the opening drill and the layers that were being loaded.
- A cancel also holds back anything that would restart the load by itself - an update from Power BI does not make the stopped load carry on.
- While paused, the dots of the Layer Toggles of unfinished layers are yellow instead of red; layers that are loaded stay green.
Visibility
The indicator is always on when there is something to show; there is no setting to hide it. The related Show Loading Indicators option only controls the dots on the Layer Toggles.
