Ribbon overview
The ribbon is the strip of buttons at the top of the visual in Focus Mode. It is divided into tabs, and each tab into sections with a caption under them.

The Chart tab is contextual: it appears in the tab strip as soon as you select a chart column and switches there by itself. When you deselect the column you are taken back to Start.
How the buttons behave
- Large and small buttons. Large buttons have an icon above a label; small ones are icon-only - rest the mouse on one to read its name and what it does.
- Greyed out. A button is greyed out when it has nothing to act on - for example the Font buttons with nothing selected, or Increase Decimal on a date column.
- Pressed. Toggle buttons look pressed while their state is on (Bold on the selected cell, the Formatting panel open). With several things selected, a toggle only shows pressed when all of them have it.
- Split buttons. Borders, Background Color and Font Color have two halves: the icon applies the last used choice again (the Borders icon shows the preset you used last; the color buttons show the color), and the small arrow next to it opens the menu. The "last used" choice is remembered for the session only.
- Menus stay open. Menus of the ribbon stay open after you click an entry, and show the new state (check marks, swatches)
immediately, so you can try several choices in a row. They close when you click somewhere else, press
Escor leave Focus Mode. Entries that open a dialog close the menu first. - Check marks. A check mark in front of an entry marks the current choice (one of several) or a switch that is on.
- Typing in boxes. The Font Name, Font Size and Number Format boxes accept typed values; confirm with
Enteror by leaving the box. - Section captions. The name under a group of buttons ("Font", "Alignment", "Number", ...) is the section's name used in this documentation, for example Start tab > Number.
What the ribbon acts on
Most Start tab buttons act on the current selection: a cell, several cells, a row, several rows, a column, a column header, several columns, or the first column. See Selecting for how to select, and Formatting layers for which formatting wins when several apply.
With nothing selected, only Font Name and Font Size are active: they change the font of the whole matrix.
