Start tab: Borders

The Borders button is in the Font section. It is modelled on Excel's: one click draws the preset you used last, the arrow next to it opens the gallery. The icon of the button always shows the preset you used last (it starts as Bottom Border).

The menu

EntryWhat it does
The sixteen presets (icon grid, five per row)Draw that preset on the selection with the current pen.
Erase BorderRemoves the borders you drew on the selection.
Border ColorA color menu for the pen. Only affects borders you draw afterwards.
Border StyleThin, Medium, Thick, Dashed or Dotted for the pen. Only affects borders you draw afterwards.

The pen (color and style) and the last preset are remembered for the session only, not saved with the report. Borders that are already drawn keep their own color and style when you change the pen.

The presets

PresetDraws
Bottom Border, Top Border, Left Border, Right BorderOne outer edge
No BorderClears every edge (same as Erase Border)
All BordersThe outside edges and all lines between the cells
Outside BordersThe outside edges
Thick Outside BordersThe outside edges, thick (3 px)
Bottom Double BorderA double line at the bottom
Thick Bottom BorderA thick line at the bottom
Top and Bottom BorderLines at top and bottom
Top and Thick Bottom BorderThin top, thick bottom
Top and Double Bottom BorderThin top, double bottom
Inside BordersThe lines between the cells, both directions
Inside Horizontal BorderThe lines between the rows
Inside Vertical BorderThe lines between the columns

Thin edges are drawn with the pen's color and style. Thick and double edges are fixed by the preset: a thick edge is 3 px solid, a double edge is 3 px double - they use the pen's color but ignore its line style, like Excel.

A preset only touches the edges it names. Bottom Border after Top Border leaves the top line in place. Only No Border switches edges off - and an edge that is switched off falls back to the template's own line there.

How a preset applies to each kind of selection

The selection is read as a block, the way an Excel range is:

SelectionMeaning of the presets
CellsThe shape the cells make: outside edges are the edges that have no selected neighbour, inside lines are the lines between selected cells. One cell gets all four edges from Outside Borders. Cells that are not touching each other get a frame each.
RowsEach row gets its part of the block in the order the rows are on screen (collapsed rows are skipped): the top edge on the first row, the bottom edge on the last, Inside Horizontal between rows, left and right edges across every row's cells.
ColumnsThe left edge on the first column, the right edge on the last, Inside Vertical between columns, top and bottom edges along every column. The top is the top of the table's first row, the bottom the bottom of its last row.
One column header (narrowed to the header)That header cell only.
First columnThe row labels as a column; narrowed to the header, the corner cells as a header cell.

Selections that are not next to each other are blocks of their own: Outside Borders on columns 1-2 and 4 gives two boxes, not one box around all of it.

A border you draw on a header wins over the Financial Header line on the same edge.

Where to see the borders

Every border you drew is listed in the Formatting panel - under the row, column or cell it belongs to, with its edge, style and width.
