Start tab: Font and Alignment

📷 Screenshot needed: start-font-group.png - the Font and Alignment sections of the Start tab with a column selected.

What the buttons change

The Font and Alignment buttons act on whatever is selected in the table:

SelectionWhat is formatted
One or more cellsThose cells only
One or more rowsThe whole row - its label and all its values
Several columnsThe values of those columns
One columnThe values of the column; if you narrowed the selection to the header (second click on the header), only the header
The first column (row labels)The row labels; if narrowed to the corner cells, only the header cells
NothingOnly Font Name and Font Size are active: they change the font of the whole matrix

Everything else is greyed out when nothing is selected. See Selecting for how to select, and Formatting layers for which formatting wins when cell, row and column all have one.

Font section

ControlWhat it does
Font Name boxShows the font of the selection (or the matrix font). Type a font name and press Enter, or open the list with the small arrow. Default: Segoe UI.
Font Size boxThe size in pixels. Type a number greater than 0, or pick from the list. Anything that is not a number is discarded and the box shows the real size again. Default: 12.
Increase Font Size / Decrease Font SizeChange the size by 1 px, between 1 and 400.
Bold, Italic, Underline, StrikethroughToggle the style. A button is pressed when all selected items have the style; a click switches it for all of them.
BordersSee Borders.
Background ColorThe icon part fills the selection with the last used color. The first time in a session that is red. The arrow opens the color menu.
Font ColorThe icon part colors the text with the last used color. The first time in a session that is blue. The arrow opens the color menu.

The font list contains: Arial, Arial Black, Arial Unicode MS, Calibri, Cambria Math, Candara, Comic Sans MS, Consolas, Constantia, Corbel, Courier New, DIN, DIN Light, Georgia, Lucida Sans Unicode, Segoe UI, Segoe UI Light, Segoe UI Semibold, Symbol, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS, Verdana and Wingdings. Any other font installed on the viewer's device can be typed in.

The size list contains 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 36, 48 and 72.

The color menu

The menu behind Background Color and Font Color (and every other color choice in the visual):

  • Standard Colors / Theme Colors. A switch between two palettes. Standard Colors is the Office palette - ten hues in six tints and shades - followed by Excel's ten fixed standard colors. Theme Colors is the same kind of grid made from the colors of the report's Power BI theme (page background, text color and the first eight data colors).
  • Recent Colors. The colors you picked this session, once you have picked one.
  • No Fill (Background Color only). Removes the fill.
  • More Colors... Opens the browser's color picker; the color applies while you pick.

Picking a color applies it at once and also becomes the "last used" color of the icon part.

Alignment section

ButtonWhat it does
Align Top, Align Middle, Align BottomVertical alignment of the text in its cell
Align Left, Align Center, Align RightHorizontal alignment of the text in its cell

The button for the alignment that is in effect is pressed. Value cells are right-aligned and top-aligned until you change them. A header has the alignment of its template until you set one, so no alignment button is pressed for a header you have not aligned yet.

What you format here is listed in the Formatting panel

Everything set from these buttons is recorded per row, column, cell or first-column part, and can be reviewed and reset in the Formatting panel.
